Pier 40 and the Hudson River Park define the edge of the city of Manhattan. The master plan for this New York waterfront district will change its historic notion of an industrial wasteland with thriving prostitution and crime, and will seize the opportunity to reconnect the city with the elements of nature. A multi‑use complex including outdoor recreation areas, sports facilities, exhibition spaces, and dining facilities will drive the city to focus on its periphery. The design promotes the natural, recreational, and tactile experiences of the site, and seeks to strengthen the Pier's urban identity while maintaining the traces of former industrial use.
